Disaster Training Courses are available at various levels of expertise.

Introduction to Disaster Services (an online course)
The American Red Cross is one of several community organizations working together to respond to disasters. The Red Cross involves annually matching knowledge, skills, interests and experience of individual's with opportunities to serve their community.
This course is an online video provided by the American Red Cross that shows you some of the work disaster volunteers perform on site and behind the scenes. It consists of a 3 minute demo and 4 modules (running time = 70 minutes). You are welcome to print a full copy of the participant materials as well.

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action
This course is a basic, entry level instructor-led course, which introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community's actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters. The course will enable individual volunteers to translate their care and compassion for their community into action and provide information to
other community agencies on Red Cross work and possible partnership in preparation for and response to a disaster.

Mass Care: An Overview
This course is designed to introduce the learners to the activities for the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation. It involves video segments, instructor lectures and classroom activities.

Logistics: An Overview
This course is
designed to give the learners an overview of the Material Support
Services group and the activities associated with it. The
purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the
processes of Material Support Services activities in support of an
American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn
about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed by Material Support
Services workers and how they can become involved in their local
chapter. The course consists of lectures and group activities.

Shelter Operations
This
instructor-led course is designed for the learners to acquire knowledge
of Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running and
closing a shelter during a disaster. The
purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to prepare
employees and volunteers of the Red Cross and other agencies to manage
shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting
the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. The course includes lecture and group exercises.

Shelter Simulation
This instructor-led
simulation is designed for learners to acquire knowledge of Red Cross
policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter
during a disaster.The
purpose of this training is to provide participants with an opportunity
to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a
successful shelter.

Special Needs Sheltering
This course is
designed for All Red Cross volunteers in Mass Care (feeding &
shelter), Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health. It
focuses on the care of children and special needs populations.

Disaster Assessment Basics
This course is
designed for local community volunteers and Disaster Action Team (DAT)
members. It encompasses the tasks and responsibilities of the Disaster
Assessment activity on a disaster relief operation. The purpose of this course is to provide a general overview of the tasks performed by Red Cross Disaster Assessment workers in support of a disaster relief operation and a local incident such as a single or multi-family fire.

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance
Client Casework is an
instructor-led, video-supported course designed to train Red Cross
caseworkers how to conduct effective client interviews and provide
appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate
disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs.
This learning experience consists of a series of short instructor and
video presentations interleaved with class discussions, which focus on
the skills, knowledge and attitudes required of a Red Cross caseworker.
This learning experience culminates in an interactive, hands-on
simulated activity during which participants are provided the
opportunity to conduct interviews, assess client needs and determine
the appropriate assistance, using the tools and resources available to
caseworkers.

Disaster Frontline Supervisor
This instructor-led course
is designed for those who aspire to supervise a work unit on a disaster
relief operation, and those who want to refresh their supervisory
skills.
The purpose of this course
is to prepare supervisors to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver
high quality client service and to create a climate that promotes
worker satisfaction.
Prerequisites

Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action, Mass
Care: An Overview, Shelter Operations, Shelter Simulations, Special
Needs Sheltering, Disaster Assessment Basics, and Client Casework:
Providing Emergency Assistance. Applicants
should have the training and experience equivalent to a Service
Associate in an activity in which she or he expects to become a
supervisor.
Disaster Frontline Supervisor Simulation
This instructor-led course
builds on the information presented in Disaster Frontline Supervisor
course. The simulation provides participants an opportunity to practice
key supervisory skills.
The purpose of this
simulation is to provide participants an opportunity to practice their
supervisory knowledge and skills in leading teams that deliver high
quality service and to create a climate that promotes worker
satisfaction.

Disaster Action Team Workshop
The DAT Workshop is an
orientation for Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers, detailing
the standards and guidelines that employees and volunteers must follow.
This course provides and
overview of Disaster Action Team responsibilities, activities and
organizational structure, including the team's relationship to the
chapter's disaster leadership team or disaster committee, and general
information about how to respond tho the media. The course covers
responsibilities and activities that result in effective and efficient
disaster action team responses.
